attended a funeral this week | davidarendale's Blog

the son of a Friend of my fathers died recently. I didn't know my dad's friend very well and i only met his son once in passing. All I did was shake his hand and say hello. now I don't do funerals as a rule. I think they do more harm to the memory of the deceased than anything. but that is a very long side issue that I won't address now. however I heard about how hard the father took his sons death and I met with him the day after he found his son dead. His son had died in his sleep from a bad combo of recreational drugs. after calling 911 he laid down in the bed and wrapped his arms around his dead son till the medics arrived. seeing how much pain he was in from the death of his son I decided I would go to the funeral to show my support. before I continue let me say I don't believe in hell. the minister who gave the talk started out talking about the deceased and the loved ones he left behind but before long he started to get off topic. he got so off topic that all the sentiment was lost and you were just left wondering if he had some form of Alzheimer's. and as he talked there was a person in the room some were saying AMEN every time the minister finished a sentence. well later on at the gave side I had opportunity make fun of both of them, and smart ass that I am I took it. I won't go into a transcript of the jokes but every one in spite of the reason we were gathered thought I was right and hilarious. everyone except my sister but as far as she's concerned if I say something it's wrong. so I don't give her disapproval much thought. in the end I was reminded why I don't go to funerals. but I must say this was one of the more civil and dignified ones.
